Our culture exhorts us to try harder, go for the goal, never give up! The messages are so loud and the training to push our way forward to a 100% level so lifelong, we find it difficult to give ourselves a break.

Once upon a time—which is actually the summer of 2022—I was struggling with intense depression, and it was far from the first time. I had been plagued with depression and anxiety for more than 30 years and I felt like a victim to its comings and goings, never knowing when I would be plunged back into its dark waters and not knowing how to help myself purposefully exit that clingy sea.

This early July morning, around 2 am, I could feel myself descending further into dangerous emotional territory. There was nothing that a hospital could do for me; I had already been there. I was taking the medication and waiting for an increased dosage to work for me, which takes up to two weeks.

I had Abraham Hicks playing on YouTube constantly. Something of a much higher frequency, I thought, would certainly help. I had been listening to Abraham for such a long time, on and off, and I had always been impressed with their “rampages”—rampages of appreciation, rampages of abundance, of self-worth, of forgiveness, and so forth.

Previously I had figured out that the way those rampages work is to started right where the person is and then ramp them up with honesty and small steps. But it wasn’t until that July night that I applied that information.

As I felt myself falling, I knew I was out of answers. I could not descend further without danger, and I had no more tools or solutions I could think of. I was unwilling to fall further and thought that the worst was at hand. Then the idea came to me to try writing my own rampage, even though I had no idea how to do that.

I reached for a journal and a pen and I started writing. Whenever I came to a stop because I didn’t know what to say next, I heard Abraham say something on YouTube that was exactly what I needed to hear to jog me forward. It was so in alignment with my focus and my need!

This happened over and over and over again as I continued writing, focused intently on the page and on my own sensing and feelings inside my body.

I knew that this repeated help from Abraham was incredible, but I didn’t have time to stop and be amazed—I just kept writing, and in 10 short minutes I was no longer in danger! I wasn’t free of depression just yet, but even in those difficult moments the fact that I—myself!—had been able to shift my own emotional setpoint was absolutely mind-blowing to me.

For four days I just wrote and wrote and wrote, and by the end of it I had no more daily depression and anxiety. Oh, I still have to take the meds (that’s a next-step, I suppose), but my quality of life had just changed 180 degrees.

The next step was to embrace Mike’s visioning, now that I felt stable and whole. That was what I did, and life slowly started to get better and better as I began to allow more light into my being, my mind, my feeling body.

And now, in just a few short weeks, I am about to become a Certified Infinite Possibilities Trainer. I eagerly welcome this amazing training, the opportunity to meet a new tribe to embrace and be embraced by, and the change to develop my own training to offer to others who think they have no control over their lives but actually do.

And all this is happening because I have been willing to understand that “go for the goal” is too big. Instead, I go for the next relieving emotion/thought and turn to the self-supporting thought and vision.

Do not underestimate the baby step. Do not mistake running for speed as better—an error I have made in the past. Do not prize the race above the slow, appreciative walk. It is the small next step that is truly transformational; it is knitted to your authentic self, right where you are, and it very simply takes you to more of you.

That is how the divine works: If in the world it’s big, spiritually it’s small. If in the world it’s small, spiritually it is enormous.

In the words of a meme making the rounds right now: “When you slow down, you feel. When you feel, you heal. And when you heal, you grow. Sometimes slowing down is the most productive thing you can do.”

  • “I am a spiritual being having a human experience.”
  • “God in me, as me, is me.” (That one is from the Centers for Spiritual Living and is my all-time favorite)
  • “I am one with the divine.”
  • These are statements we commonly hear and say that we believe, but what do we do with that information?

Often, we beat ourselves up. We try to “fix” ourselves. We identify our “issues” and then we try to stop whatever we think we’re doing wrong or change who we are being.

And let’s be honest—it’s just not successful!

Because what is the point? Not to just get better in the eyes of society. Not to become “worthy” when we already are. Not to “fix” ourselves—when we are one with divinity, what is there to “fix”? The point is different from all of that.

The point is to feel all those qualities that we say we are one with: love, forgiveness, joy, wisdom, not to mention giggles, flexibility, letting it all be (I think we can call that surrender, if we must).

And if that sounds like the point of it all, then this whole fixing thing is a criminal kind of self-mistreatment.

A new paradigm is calling, and it has nothing to do with all that self-reproach. Not a darn thing.

The new paradigm calls to us, saying, “Please step into practicing all those things you want—and practice feeling them as if they are present now. Why? Because when you feel them, they are now, and they are shifting your point of attraction so that you are stepping into a whole different stream of life!”

    Whaaaat?

Yeah. It takes a while to “get” that as a concept, and then it takes a while to get that experientially, but if that is your goal, you’re on a really powerful track. The track to realization, to self-empowerment, to conscious co-creation.

What does any of that do for you?

Well, it only does everything for you.

You no longer have to feel like all you do is wait for “God’s timing” or grace or whatever your formulation of that time is: now you are working on aligning your energy with all that you want to do, be, or have. And you’re aligning now.

    And now.

    And now.

And it feels so. darned. GOOD!

And then you start to see the results on the outside, and you realize, Holy moly, that’s all coming from my energy! And I made that happen just by adjusting my emotions 1% at a time? Holy Gawd, I think I’m on to something.

And that’s when all of life changes.

Instead of receiving the help you need, you are guiding the change you want.

That’s a whole new game. That’s the new paradigm we’ve all heard about for decades and didn’t quite understand.

That’s when we welcome ourselves into the magic we always suspected was there and realize, experientially, the magic actually is us.

It was 1988 when I met the great saint Ammachi. I was in my early 30s—so was she!—and I was higher than a kite, energetically, just from being in her expansive, Self-based presence.

    Bliss!

It was also around that time that I was introduced to Mike Dooley and his set of tapes called Infinite Possibilities. Those tapes made me feel so stabilized in high knowings. The problem was that I couldn’t maintain that feeling, and I couldn’t maintain the bliss of being in Amma’s presence either. Back into sadness and depression I would go.

In the spiritual and personal growth arenas of the 1980s, I heard “I am that” and “be who you are” a lot as desirable ways of getting in touch with my “natural bliss.”

I didn’t know what that meant, so I started on a journey into questions and self-exploration.

If I had known then what I know now, my journey would have been shorter. But I suppose I would also not have as much ballast as I do from traveling through many different internal lands and external challenges.

I know now how to identify “who I am” and how to pull good and better and best into my life, and I think the mystery is a lot simpler than I thought it was when I was in my 30s.

    1. Practicing Emotional Identity

I always wanted to be that really cool woman who knows who she is, who is in total control of herself, and who doesn’t follow the rules but still manages to be admired and liked by everyone.

Instead, I found myself the floundering one, burdened with anxiety and depression problems, and unsure of myself.

What I know now that I didn’t know then is that there’s no “getting home” to one’s Self, and there’s no clearing of “issues” or “problems” in order to be granted access to the true Self or even to release depression. No.

What I have to do is turn my “ship,” bit by bit by bit, into the practice of feeling the emotions that make me feel better. And I have to do it NOW. And NOW. And again NOW.

Not every second—just every day that I want to embed within my identity a little more, and a little more, and a little more, that emotional knowing of who I really am: my nature, my humor, my whimsy, my flow of me-ness.

Six-year-old kids have this: no self-consciousness, no judging themselves against the other kids. They just…are. And you can tell that they feel it, and the feeling is all they need to fuel their little lives of joy.

We older “kids” are no different.

    2. Energy Builds on Itself

Something else I wish I had known is that when I work to shift my emotional set point, it’s a cumulative situation. In other words, I’m not starting over each time I do some more work; instead, I’m building on the transformation I have already made!

Now I use tools like Wisdom Writing and The 1% SolutionTM that I created which includes Rampage Writing (adapted to my own purposes from the Abraham Hicks work) and various Abraham exercises—and the progress I make each time is lasting.

The fact that energy BUILDS and doesn’t build-and-fade has been a life-changing revelation to me!

Wait a minute! You mean to say that when I spend some time in let-go, in the “vortex,” in my Visioning, in meditation, the shift from that positive energy is lasting? Do you mean that I am always building up, rather than starting over each time?

YESSSSS! Oh. Mah. Gawd! Do you know what a difference that makes to my faith in my efforts?

    It makes every difference!

    3. 17 Seconds

This one is straight out of Abraham Hicks’s teachings and goes hand-in-hand with energetic builds and the Law of Attraction.

According to Abraham, if you can maintain just 17 seconds of positive energy, that engages the Law of Attraction to give you more and more. For every 17 seconds more, you are madly multiplying the assistance of the matching energies you prefer and reducing the number of hours of physical effort you would have to put in to match that!

This is why Visioning is so powerful!

If you can have “pure, uncontradicted thought” about something positive, the results are so much more powerful than the physical—it’s mind-blowing.

    According to Abraham:

    • 17 seconds is worth 2,000 hours of work (about 1 year)
    • 34 seconds is worth 20,000 hours of work (about 10 years)
    • 51 seconds is worth 200,000 hours of work (about 100 years)
    • 68 seconds is worth 2,000,000 hours of work (about 1,000 years)

Now, you can see this from two perspectives. One is “Ohmygod, I need 1,000 years worth of physical effort to even get close to what I want to see in my life?” Not a cheerful perspective, and therefore less helpful, really.

For my part, I see this from the perspective of knowing that the hours of work are not about gaining externals. It’s about experiences—shifts that are surprisingly private, small, humble. The work that takes that kind of time consists of making our way to the right perspectives. That’s what takes 2,000,000 hours/1,000 years worth of work!

That I can believe. We’ve been taken so far away from looking at ourselves in the enveloping silence of our own minds and hearts. Fortunately, it’s always there, waiting for us to recognize ourselves.

And all we need is 17 seconds and an understanding of the cumulative power of energy, the knowing that our energy rides out on our emotions which we can shift if they’re troubling, and a strong desire to take on our practiced behaviors and choose instead to ride the energy wave!

    Wowowowow!

And then we begin to rendezvous with what we want in our lives because like attracts like energetically.

    Those are some game-changing truths!

Gee… if I had only known, but I’m so glad I do now! Aren’t you?

I was drowning in emotion and that wasn’t unusual. But something was about to change. I was about to take a sharp left turn at Albuquerque (to paraphrase Mr. Bugs Bunny) and transform my life!

It was summer 2022, and I was in terrible emotional pain: depression and 24/7 anxiety attacks. I was listening to Mike Dooley and to Abraham Hicks while I was having a Not Good Time in my life. After two visits to the emergency room, I understood that this was the second turning point in my life where I was going to have to rescue myself.

The man in the white hat wasn’t coming. Prayer wasn’t going to fix this. And it was 2:30 in the morning, so I couldn’t call anyone to talk the feelings down. I was going to have to act.

I was just about to emerge, but I didn’t know that.

The feelings getting stronger told me that another visit to the ER was in order, but I knew there was nothing further they could do for me. So out of desperation I picked up my journal and a pen.

I thought to myself, “I am going to write a rampage like those Abraham does verbally,” and I started writing…

I feel just awful, and I know that there is a way to feel better even if I don’t know how to do it, but I can’t go on just feeling like this and not getting better.

I stopped writing for a nanosecond, uncertain what to write. Then I heard Abraham’s voice (which I’d heard on YouTube), saying, “Go general. You have to go general when you don’t know what specifically to ask for.” And I wrote:

So, Abraham says to go general, so I’m going general. I know that there’s a vortex because I have felt it especially when I was a kid, and I know that Abraham says that 17 seconds of focus will help bring more positive energy in so I’m going to keep writing…

Every time I stopped, uncertain where to move forward, there would be Abraham’s voice saying something that I would jump on and keep writing. It was magical! And it was manifestation, positive assistance flowing in as I allowed myself to open to just .01% better-feeling thoughts, one by one.

I had learned years ago from Mike Dooley that visioning has the power to erase a day full of angst. What I hadn’t learned was how to stopper up the hole in my emotional boat; it was always easier to think negatively and watch the positive quickly leak out.

But I had been listening with great attention to Abraham’s teachings, and the objections my mind had presented were being erased by the practical nature of those teachings.

So, where my mind asked, “What good is it to feel good when I’m only going to still have all of this crud to deal with?” my new learning said, “The good it does is that of building your positive energy—which is cumulative (yowzah!)—and powerful beyond all telling, and which you can use to get out ahead of your life and seed it with better experiences!”

In just a few minutes I had gone from despair to determination. And I kept the energy going, and the listening and learning, and the practice of writing—which I now call Rampage Writing—and the quality of my life has changed completely.

I can now work with my emotions at any time and bring myself up out of victimhood, depression, you name it! And the more I work with that, the broader and deeper the impact. Exceptional!

As I share the teachings from this experience with people, here is what they find the most useful:

    1. Keep your intention small and personally measurable. Don’t try to go from A to Z or even A to B as your goal for self-improvement. Go from A to A1.
You know if you feel better or worse, and that is all the proof you need if you want to stand on solid ground as you change your life. So don’t try to go from miserable to blissful; you’ll miss all of the growth and self-appreciation and yummy discovery that you came here to have!

    2. Turn on the light instead of trying to push the dark out of your personal struggles.
In other words, when things feel insanely difficult—you’re in a bad relationship or you’re struggling with money issues—trying to wrestle the situation to the ground just puts more energy into the problem instead of into the solution.

This is counterintuitive, I know, but let in something positive. Remember what Mike says: Five minutes of visioning erases 23 hours and 55 minutes of worry!

    3. Feel your way forward!
You have the power to change your emotional state and your life direction, but it doesn’t come from thinking, it comes from feeling.

Use visioning. Use Rampage Writing. Listen to Abraham. Listen to Mike. But don’t just use these tools—apply them. Challenge yourself to be kind with you and relentless with your hold-ups, and watch the results happen.

Watch for them in small ways. Remember: from A to A1, not even A to B, and you’ll be able to witness the changes that give you traction.

And don’t worry. You got this! It’s in your emotional DNA.
